Damn it A-Rod

A-Rod, oh A-Rod.....why do you have to play the game like a little league bully? Is it beacuse the ladies of the night you frequent frustrate you? Is it because you get heckled so often from the other players you feel the need to fight back? Or is it just because your parents didn't love you enough. Regardless, that is not the type of crap that is consistent with wearing the pinstripes. Playing for the Yankees is about pride, respect, and history. We don't want to win games by cheating. Yes, there have been instances in the past where fan interferance has made a difference, but that was a little kid, not the highest paid player in baseball history on the most storied franchice in all of sports. Maybe A-Rod needs a lesson in sportsmanship, but in my opinion its disrespectful to the game to pull the kind of crap that he pulled last night. The last thing we need right now is a bench clearing brawl with Toronto that will knock out a few more of our players just as June starts. So quit the crap and start playing the game by the rules.

Now, I am happy to report that despite A-Rod's on the field and off the filed antics we won, and the red sox lost. We still have a lot of ground to make up but since I don't want to feel the wrath of "the girl from Jersey who can't play pool" I will say that it isn't impossible. The Yankees made up a 14 game deficit in 1978 to come back and win it, so why don't we just do the same thing this year.

The worst part about A-Rod's antics last night was that he pulled them in the 9th inning, when there was no time to retaliate. Had he pulled that in the 3rd inning, he would have gotten plunked, a cleats-up slide, or something like that.

In any case, I don't think the Jays will be forgetting the incident any time soon, and they'll have 14 more games this season to atone.

Okay, I'm going to admit something here. We are clearly not having the best season. We may not win the division much less the series. But here's what makes me a Yankees fan. I love them. I love them when they suck, I love em when they win. I love them becuase they are the yankees, and all that comes with that. The history, the stadium, the being that is the yankees. So we suck this year (and in reality, we don't suck, we're just not fantastic) but that just means we stand behind our boys, enjoy the game, and wait for next year. Cause they will be better. It might not seem like that now, but hell, back in the 80s who would have ever thought we could have a stretch like the 90s???

And thats why I get so pissy when people start calling for Torre's or Cashman's head on a plate. They both love the game, and more importantly, the team. They are yankees. You don't friggin call for one of your own to get the boot. That said, and here's the point of this little rant, A-rod is not. He's just a guy who likes to win. He's got no class, both on and off the field. He has no idea what it means to play on a team and not just for himself. A-rod is no yankee. Get rid of him, and see how fast team moral improves and we start to look like the yankees again and not just a bunch of guys standing around a field in the Bronx.

Okay, getting off my soap box now...

I agree with both of you. Matt, you can bet that A-Rod is going to get thrown at the next time these two teams meet, and you can also bet that there is going to be a brawl. It's just a shame that the team will be defending A-Rod.

Liz, I couldn't agree with you more. I think A-Rod leaving would be good for morale. He may like to win, but up until now he really seems to like himself a whole lot more.

Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn sometimes. You folks are right, A-Rod does not fit the Yankee mold and is not the team player he could be. Nevertheless, I don't remember anyone complaining in April when he hit a record number of homeruns (I seem to recall an entry in this blog stating "A-Rod: In short....WOW!"). He is a great player and makes a substantial contribution (hopefully some day in the playoffs). In any event, A-Rod is not the problem, nor is Torre, Cashman, or even the Stein. The problem started with pitching injuries and under performance with the survivors. The bats were initially incredible but couldn't save the mound. The problem moved from the mound to their heads. Sports are 90% mental and a layman can look at the faces of the Yankees and see that they are all a bunch of incredibly talented, highly paid, nut jobs right now. They need to exercise the deamon...sage their uniforms, get a team colonic, do a little dance (ahem, I guess A-Rod prefers to get them), skip batting practice again, or whatever it takes to shake it off and start enjoying the game again. Now, I watched last night's game...it was sloppy...and if you saw the previous game against Toronto I guaranty you felt the same way I did...that there was a great chance they were going to blow the game in the end as the relief faltered ...then I saw Posada's flyball drop between third and second bases and quite frankly, I laughed my ass off...I then proceeded to fall out of my chair laughing (remember, I was already assless) when A-Rod couldn't keep a straight face and let a @#$! eating grin escape after the umpires separated everyone. He didn't yell "I got it" he said something like "HA!". In any event, I don't care if he said "would you like some Grey Poupon" nor do I give a rat's @#$s! whether it is any different from sliding hard into the catcher...what I am interested in is the effect. I guaranty that everybody on the Yankee team laughed as well whether they were on the field, in the dugout, or in the locker room. Some were caught on camera. Its a relatable moment to the childhood of any athlete who inevitably yelled "choke" . They could use a laugh and let's be real..that was some funny s@#t if you watched it live.... Get off your moral high horses...its a game...and with any luck, it may have been the moment in which the Yanks exercised their deamon.
