Opening Day Recap and Thoughts on Bonds

Due to being busy I never got a chance to recap MLB's opening day. Here are some thoughts on one of the greatest days of the year:

  • I'm happy to say that Alex Rodriguez homered with a man on base, maybe the monkey is finally off his back in clutch hitting situations. Jorge Posada also homered.

In other news Barry Bonds went 1 for 3 yesterday with a single in his first at bat. If he breaks Hank Aaron's record it will be a scar on the face of baseball that could only be made worse if he is inducted into Cooperstown. I think that it is fair to say that anyone who has even heard of Major League Baseball is sure that Barry is on the juice. An induction into the hall of fame would serve the wrong message that it is ok to cheat, so long as you pretend that you didn't. A Bonds induction would also be a vote for hypocrisy since Pete Rose will never have his day at Doubleday Field. Hopefully the fact that Mark McGwire didn't make it this year gives us all hope that the cheaters will have their come uppance.

Bonds deserves to be in the hall. There are PLENTY of cheaters already in there. What do you think about spitballers from the 1930's? How about the fact that half of baseball has used amphetamines since the early 70's? There have been sign-stealers, racists, and misanthropes inducted. The Hall is there for one purpose: to memorialize great baseball players. You cannot deny that Bonds is a great player. How many MVP's has he won? How many Gold Gloves has he won? That is why he will get in first-ballot while McGwire did not. McGwire was one of the most feared hitters of his day, but his reign on the absolute top was only a few years. Bonds has been brilliant for a long, long time.

Records are made to be broken, and Bonds is going to break Aaron's. This year. This is not such a horrible thing. People will always remember what era that Bonds played in and use it to gauge his place in baseball history. For example, Roger Clemens numbers don't stack up to any of the pitchers in the deadball era, yet we can still say that he is one of the best pitchers ever. You have to consider the era, and IMHO when people look back on Bonds and his records they will do so remembering the era, WITHOUT the need for an asterix. The asterix is an insult to any baseball fan's intelligence.

Screw Matthew, I agree with this post. Bonds doesn't deserve the hall, and you don't deserve to call yourself a baseball fan if you think he does.

I think that the spit ball era is a bad example since EVERYONE had to face off against tainted balls so it evened the playing field. Steroids give players an unfair and illegal advantage, in other words CHEATING. It is hypocritical to decide that one type of cheating is ok (Barry Bonds) but another is not (Pete Rose). If you are going to let Bonds get into the hall of fame then you have to say that Pete Rose should be allowed in too, but that is never going to happen. Remember, Rose broke a lot of records too. Records are meant to be broken, but this isn't about that at all. If you go to a casino and you change the play of the game to give yourself an unfair advantage you at the very least will get kicked out, and probably arrested. Why should you be able to do this in baseball?
Bond's is a poster child for someone who needs to be made an example of. Not only for his illicit drug use, but also for his complete lack of respect for the fans of baseball by lying to them day in and day out about it.

Hey Dude! Thanks for visiting my site. You are very timely... On the way there I was putting em in my wallet but then I figured she might see them when I paid so I put em in my raincoat... And I made sure it could fasten up so they wouldn't fall out... But then I brought that same raincoat to the office which could be embarrassing...

I don't think A-Rod has just one monkey though... That guy just wasn't cut out for NY. He's obviously one of the best ever but I think he's not right for the Yankees.
